This background setting was indeed incorrect, however, it did not cause the main problem.
The problem was: The link "Show registration code" was not visible in the live forum. The test forum worked fine.
The problem was already fixed after following your suggestion to upgrade to RC12. I just did not recognise it.
Why?
With RC11, the link was always displayed to anybody when not logged in. With RC12, the link is shown to guest only after starting the registration process.
For testing RC12, I only logged off to become a guest and expected to see the link like it was with RC11.
I apologize for wasting your time. You had fixed the problem earlier.

I still do not understand why RC11 did not work in the live forum. I had removed it and made a new install without success.
Nevertheless, RC12 works and I'm happy to have now a solid improvement in my Spambot countermeasures.

RC11 did indeed have the code showing incorrectly (due to me messing up) but now its all working as I want it to
